How Often Should You Clean Your Air Ducts?

The truth about duct cleaning frequency — what the experts recommend, what factors change the timeline, and how to know when it's time.

The short answer: every 3 to 5 years for most homes. But the real answer depends on your specific situation — and there are clear signs that mean you shouldn't wait.

What the Experts Recommend

The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends having your air ducts cleaned every 3 to 5 years. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) doesn't specify a fixed timeline but recommends cleaning when there's visible mold, excessive dust, or evidence of rodent or insect infestation.

At B&J Air Solutions, we've found that the 3–5 year guideline works well for most homes in the Greater Boston & MetroWest area. But several factors can shorten that window significantly.

Factors That Shorten the Timeline

1. Pets

If you have dogs or cats — especially multiple pets — their dander and hair get pulled into your duct system continuously. Homes with pets should consider cleaning every 2 to 3 years.

2. Allergies or Respiratory Conditions

If anyone in your household suffers from asthma, allergies, or other respiratory issues, cleaner ducts can directly reduce irritants circulating through your home. These homes benefit from more frequent cleaning — every 2 to 3 years.

3. Recent Renovations

Construction dust is finer and more pervasive than everyday dust. If you've recently renovated, had floors refinished, or done any major construction, your ducts almost certainly need cleaning regardless of the calendar.

4. Smokers in the Home

Tobacco smoke leaves residue that accumulates in ductwork and recirculates. Homes with indoor smokers should clean every 2 years.

Signs You Shouldn't Wait

Regardless of the calendar, clean your ducts immediately if you notice:

  • Visible dust around vents — dark lines or dust buildup on vent covers
  • Musty odors when the HVAC runs
  • Inconsistent airflow — some rooms are colder or warmer than others
  • Higher energy bills with no other explanation
  • Excessive dust on furniture shortly after cleaning

The Bottom Line

If you can't remember the last time your ducts were cleaned — or you've never had them cleaned — it's time. At B&J Air Solutions, we start every job with a free camera inspection so you can see exactly what's in your ducts before we begin. No pressure, no obligation.
